To complement the snapping there is also an orthogonal option (). This will constrain the point to be inline horizontally or vertically with the previous point. This mode may also be toggled with the F8 key and temporarily toggled with the SHIFT key.

Note: the grid spacing value may be adjusted by going to the Geometry tab of the Options dialog.
