Square Lifting Lug

The Square Lifting Lug is a rectangular plate with a round-ended slot cut up into it from the middle of the bottom edge. The slot is open at the bottom and finishes in a semicircle, so the part is a square-topped lug with two legs either side of the slot. It is cut as a single closed outline: the slot is part of the outside profile, not a separate hole.

It appears in the shapes library under Lifting Lugs, Rectangular Shapes and Tools.

Insert point and orientation

The insert point is the bottom left corner of the lug. Lug Width is built to the right along X and Lug Height upwards along Y. The slot is centred on the bottom edge, at X = Lug Width / 2, and runs upwards from it. Each leg either side of the slot is (Lug Width - Slot Diameter) / 2 wide.

The outline starts at the insert point and runs up the left side, across the top, down the right side and along the bottom of the right leg. It then runs up the right-hand wall of the slot, over the semicircular slot end, down the left-hand wall of the slot, and along the bottom of the left leg back to the insert point.

Properties

Lengths are in the current units (mm or inches). The defaults shown are for a new shape; the inch defaults are used when the program is set to inches. The table follows the order of the property page.

Property

Description

Default

Lug Width

Overall width of the lug, along X. Must be greater than Slot Diameter.

150 mm (6 in)

Lug Height

Overall height of the lug, along Y, from the bottom edge to the top edge. Must be greater than Slot Height.

100 mm (4 in)

Slot Diameter

Width of the slot. This is also the diameter of the semicircle at the top of the slot.

50 mm (2 in)

Slot Height

Height of the slot, from the bottom edge of the lug to the top of the semicircle. The centre of the semicircle is at Slot Height - Slot Diameter / 2 above the bottom edge.

75 mm (3 in)

The dimensions drawn on the shape are Lug Width (across the top), Lug Height (up the left side), Slot Diameter (across the slot opening) and Slot Height.

Limits

If any of the following is not met, or is exactly equal to its limit, the shape is not built. It has no geometry, so nothing is cut. The property page then shows a red bar, Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters, below the shape's own properties. The message does not say which limit failed, so check the values against this list:

•Slot Height must be less than Lug Height, so there is material above the slot.

•Slot Diameter must be less than Lug Width, so that each leg, (Lug Width - Slot Diameter) / 2, has some width.

•Slot Height must be greater than Slot Diameter / 2, so the slot has a straight part below the centre of the semicircle.

The shape does not check Slot Diameter for zero or negative values, and does not check that the material above the slot or the legs either side of it are strong enough for the load. Size the lug, and the material left round the slot, for the lift.

Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the shape's own properties.
