Diamond Flange (Chamfered)

The Diamond Flange (Chamfered) is a diamond-shaped plate with its four points cut off flat, a central hole, and one hole either side of the centre along X. With Chamfer set to 0 the points are left sharp and the outline is a plain diamond.

This shape was formerly called Flange 3. It appears in the shapes library under Flanges.

Insert point and orientation

The insert point is the middle of the left-hand flat (the left point of the diamond when Chamfer is 0). The shape is built to the right by Width, and is centred vertically on the insert point, half of Height above it and half below. The central hole sits at the centre of the diamond, Width / 2 to the right of the insert point, and the two side holes sit on the same horizontal line, Hole Distance to the left and right of the central hole.

Properties

Lengths are in mm or inch, as set in the program.

Property

Description

Default

Width

Overall length of the diamond along X, from the left flat to the right flat (point to point when Chamfer is 0).

125 mm (5 in)

Height

Overall height of the diamond along Y, from the bottom flat to the top flat (point to point when Chamfer is 0).

75 mm (3 in)

Chamfer

Length of the flat cut across each of the four points. The left and right flats are vertical and the top and bottom flats are horizontal, all of this length and centred on where the point would have been. Width and Height are not changed by the chamfer while Chamfer is less than both (see Limits). 0 (or less) leaves the four points sharp.

25 mm (1 in)

Hole Distance

Centre distance from the central hole to each side hole, along X. The two side holes are therefore 2 x Hole Distance apart, centre to centre.

50 mm (2 in)

Central D

Diameter of the central hole. 0 puts a point at the hole centre instead of a hole (for example to mark a drill position).

25 mm (1 in)

Side D

Diameter of the two side holes. Both side holes are the same size. 0 puts a point at each hole centre instead of a hole.

12.5 mm (0.5 in)

The dimensions drawn on the shape are Width, Height, Chamfer (on the left flat), Central D, Side D (on the right-hand hole) and Hole Distance (from the left-hand hole to the centre).

Limits

This shape does not check its values against each other or against the outline, so it does not refuse a combination that gives a bad part. Check the drawing when you change the sizes:

•Chamfer should be less than both Width and Height. If Chamfer is more than Width, the top and bottom flats run past the left and right ends and the outline folds back over itself. If Chamfer is more than Height, the left and right flats run past the top and bottom flats and the outline is taller than Height. A negative Chamfer is ignored and the points are left sharp, the same as 0.

•The central hole and a side hole overlap when Hole Distance is less than (Central D + Side D) / 2.

•The two side holes overlap each other when 2 × Hole Distance is less than Side D.

•A side hole breaks out past the left or right end of the outline when Hole Distance + (Side D / 2) is more than Width / 2. The outline narrows away from the centre line towards the top and bottom, so a hole can also break through the sloping edges even when this test passes.

•Negative lengths and diameters are not checked by this shape.

If an error occurs while building, the build stops at that point, so the outline or holes may be incomplete, and the property page shows a red bar reading Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters. There is no separate check that gives a message for each value.

Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the properties above.
