Diamond Flange (Filleted)

The Diamond Flange (Filleted) is a diamond (rhombus) shaped plate with all four corners rounded, a central hole, and two side holes on the Width (X) axis, one either side of the centre. (Formerly listed as "Flange 2"; searching for the old name still finds it.)

It appears in the shapes library under Flanges.

Insert point and orientation

The shape is built on a diamond whose four corner points are the centres of the corner fillets. The insert point is the left corner point of that diamond – the centre of the left fillet arc, at (0, 0). Width runs to the right along X to the right corner point at (Width, 0), and Height is centred on the X axis, so the top and bottom corner points are at (Width/2, Height/2) and (Width/2, -Height/2).

All three holes lie on the X axis. The central hole is centred at (Width/2, 0) and the two side holes are centred Hole Distance either side of it, at (Width/2 – Hole Distance, 0) and (Width/2 + Hole Distance, 0).

The straight edges are the edges of that diamond moved outwards by Fillet R, and each corner is an arc of radius Fillet R centred on a corner point. The finished outline is therefore Width + 2 × Fillet R long and Height + 2 × Fillet R high, and its left edge is Fillet R to the left of the insert point. The outline is one closed path that starts on the lower left edge, next to the left corner, and runs anticlockwise.

Properties

Property

Description

Default

Width

Distance along X between the centres of the left and right corner fillets, in length units (mm or inches). The overall length of the part is Width + 2 × Fillet R.

200 mm (8 in)

Height

Distance along Y between the centres of the top and bottom corner fillets, in length units. The overall height of the part is Height + 2 × Fillet R.

100 mm (4 in)

Fillet R

Radius of the four corner arcs, in length units. The same radius is used on every corner. 0 gives a sharp-cornered diamond with its corners on the corner points.

25 mm (1 in)

Hole Distance

Distance along X from the centre of the central hole to the centre of each side hole, in length units. The two side holes are 2 × Hole Distance apart, centre to centre.

50 mm (2 in)

Central D

Diameter of the central hole, in length units. 0 leaves a point instead of a hole.

50 mm (2 in)

Side D

Diameter of each of the two side holes, in length units. Both side holes are the same size. 0 leaves a point instead of each hole.

25 mm (1 in)

The defaults depend on the default unit system: the inch values are used when the default units are inches.

Notes

•Cannot build shape. Width and Height must both be greater than 0. The corner geometry divides by Height and by Width, so a value of 0 raises an error. The property page then shows the red bar "Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters", and the shape is not built from those values.

•Fillet R of 0 or more gives a valid outline, because the fillets are added outside the corner points rather than cut into the corners. A larger Fillet R makes the part bigger, not more rounded within the same size. Arcs are only drawn for Fillet R greater than 0. A negative value is not rejected. The edges then move inwards and no arcs are drawn, so the outline is a smaller, sharp-cornered diamond.

•Nothing checks that the holes fit. The central hole and the side holes must not overlap: Hole Distance must be greater than (Central D + Side D) / 2. Along the X axis the outline is at X = –Fillet R and X = Width + Fillet R, so the side holes must satisfy Width/2 – Hole Distance – Side D/2 > –Fillet R and Width/2 + Hole Distance + Side D/2 < Width + Fillet R. Holes that clear the X axis can still reach the diagonal edges of a short, wide part; check those by eye.

•For a diamond flange with chamfered corners use Diamond Flange (Chamfered); for a round flange with a bolt circle use Flange.

Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the properties above.
