Chamfered rectangle

The Chamfered rectangle is a rectangle with all four corners cut off at 45°. It is a single closed profile of eight straight lines, It is used wherever the corners of a rectangular part must be chamfered rather than square.

It appears in the shapes library under Rectangular Shapes.

Insert point and direction

The insert point is the bottom left corner of the rectangle's bounding box – the point where the left and bottom edges would meet if the corner were not chamfered. The insert point is therefore not on the profile itself. The shape extends Width to the right (+X) and Height upward (+Y) from it.

The profile starts on the left edge, at the top end of the bottom left chamfer, and runs clockwise: up the left edge, across the top, down the right edge and back along the bottom.

Properties

Property

Description

Default

Width

Overall size along X, measured between the left and right edges (mm or inch).

75 mm (about 2.95 in)

Height

Overall size along Y, measured between the bottom and top edges (mm or inch).

125 mm (about 4.92 in)

Chamfer len.

Length of each 45° chamfer edge, measured along the chamfer itself (mm or inch). Every corner gets the same chamfer. Each chamfer removes Chamfer len. ÷ √2 (about 0.707 × Chamfer len.) from the end of each adjoining side.

25 mm (about 0.98 in)

The default values are stored in millimetres (75 mm, 125 mm and 25 mm). In inch units the same stored values are shown converted, as in the brackets above.

Limits

The shape does not check its values against these limits, so a value outside them builds without any warning. If building the geometry does fail, the property page shows the red line Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters, the cut outline is left empty, no Polar Array copies are made, the dimensions are not drawn and the shape is drawn with a broken-shape marker. Keep the values within these limits yourself:

•Chamfer len. must be no more than the smaller of Width and Height divided by √2 (about 0.707 × the smaller side). At that value the two chamfers on the shorter side meet and that side has no straight edge; above it the profile folds back across itself along that side.

•A Chamfer len. of 0 gives a plain rectangle with zero-length segments at the corners. Use the Rectangle shape instead.

•Width, Height and Chamfer len. should be positive. Negative values are accepted and give a self-crossing profile.

The dimensions drawn on the shape are Height, measured between the bottom and top edges, Width, measured between the left and right edges, and Chamfer len., drawn on the top right chamfer.

Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the shape's own properties.
