Gusset (Sloped, Chamfered Corner)

The Gusset (Sloped, Chamfered Corner) is a flat plate for a right-angle joint. Its bottom edge and its right edge are full width and full height and meet at a right angle. A short vertical left edge and a short horizontal top edge are joined by a sloped edge. The right-angle corner is cut off at 45°, which leaves the inside corner of the joint clear of material or weld. The profile is one closed outline of six straight lines. This shape was formerly called Gusset 1. The old name is kept as an alias, so a search for Gusset 1 still finds this shape.

It appears in the shapes library under Gussets.

Insert point and direction

The insert point is the bottom left corner of the gusset, at X = 0, Y = 0, and it is on the profile. The shape extends to the right (+X) by Base Width and upward (+Y) by Height from it. The chamfered right-angle corner is at the bottom right.

The profile starts at the insert point and runs clockwise: up the left edge, along the sloped edge to the top edge, across the top, down the right edge, across the chamfer and back along the bottom edge to the start.

Properties

Property

Description

Default

Base Width

Overall size along X, from the left edge to the right edge (mm or inch). This is the length of the bottom edge before the chamfer is taken off.

100 mm (4 in)

Top Width

Length of the horizontal top edge, measured back from the right edge (mm or inch). The sloped edge starts at the left end of the top edge.

25 mm (1 in)

Height

Overall size along Y, from the bottom edge to the top edge (mm or inch). This is the length of the right edge before the chamfer is taken off.

150 mm (6 in)

Left Height

Length of the vertical left edge, measured up from the bottom edge (mm or inch). The sloped edge starts at the top of the left edge.

25 mm (1 in)

Chamfer

Length of the 45° chamfer across the bottom right corner, measured along the chamfer itself (mm or inch). The chamfer removes Chamfer ÷ √2 (about 0.707 × Chamfer) from the end of both the bottom edge and the right edge.

50 mm (2 in)

The sloped edge runs from the top of the left edge (X = 0, Y = Left Height) to the left end of the top edge (X = Base Width − Top Width, Y = Height). Its slope is set entirely by the other four values; there is no angle property.

The dimensions drawn on the shape are Base Width, Height, Left Height, Top Width and Chamfer. The Chamfer dimension is the straight length of the chamfer edge, not its horizontal or vertical extent.

Limits

The shape does not range-check its values, and out-of-range values do not raise an error. Keep the values within these limits yourself:

•Top Width should be no more than Base Width, and Left Height no more than Height. At Top Width = Base Width the sloped edge becomes vertical; at Left Height = Height it becomes horizontal. Beyond those values the top edge overhangs the left edge, or the sloped edge runs downward.

•Chamfer ÷ √2 must be less than both Base Width and Height, and the chamfer must not run into the sloped edge. If it does, the outline crosses itself and will not cut correctly.

•A Chamfer of 0 leaves a square corner, with a zero-length segment in the outline.

•Negative values are not rejected. They give a mirrored or self-crossing outline.

If building the shape raises an exception, the error is caught and the property page shows the red bar Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters between the shape's own properties and the Transform group.

Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the shape's own properties.
