L

The L is a closed L-shaped plate profile: a vertical leg on the left and a horizontal leg along the bottom, joined at the bottom left corner. The height and width of each leg are set separately. The five convex corners and the one re-entrant (inside) corner can each be given a fillet radius.

It appears in the shapes library under Other Shapes. It is a closed part outline; for an open two-line severing cut use the L Cut instead.

Insert point and orientation

The insert point is the outside bottom left corner of the L. The vertical leg is built upwards along Y and the horizontal leg to the right along X. With sharp corners the outline runs clockwise from the insert point through these six corners:

1.(0, 0) – the insert point

2.(0, Left Height) – top left

3.(Top Width, Left Height) – top right of the vertical leg

4.(Top Width, Right Height) – the re-entrant corner

5.(Bottom Width, Right Height) – top right of the horizontal leg

6.(Bottom Width, 0) – bottom right

So Top Width is the thickness of the vertical leg and Right Height is the thickness of the horizontal leg.

Properties

Lengths are in the current units (mm or inches). The defaults shown are for a new shape; the inch defaults are used when the program is set to inches. The table follows the order of the property page.

Property

Description

Default

Left Height

Overall height of the left side – the height of the vertical leg, measured up from the insert point.

100 mm (4 in)

Bottom Width

Overall width of the bottom edge – the length of the horizontal leg, measured right from the insert point.

75 mm (3 in)

Right Height

Height of the right hand end, which is the thickness of the horizontal leg.

25 mm (1 in)

Top Width

Width of the top end, which is the thickness of the vertical leg.

25 mm (1 in)

Outer Fillet R

Fillet radius applied to every convex (outside) corner. 0 leaves them sharp.

0 (sharp)

Inner Fillet R

Fillet radius applied to the re-entrant (inside) corner where the two legs meet. 0 leaves it sharp.

0 (sharp)

The dimensions drawn on the shape are Left Height, Bottom Width, Right Height and Top Width, measured between the sharp corners so they read the same with or without fillets, plus Outer Fillet R and Inner Fillet R on one corner each. A radius dimension is hidden when its radius is 0.

Which corners are outer and inner

Each corner is classed by which way the outline actually turns there, not by its position in the list above. With the usual proportions (Top Width less than Bottom Width and Right Height less than Left Height) corner 4 is the re-entrant corner and gets Inner Fillet R; the other five get Outer Fillet R. If the sizes are changed so that a different corner turns inwards, that corner gets Inner Fillet R instead. A corner next to a side of zero length, or where the outline runs straight on, has no turn and is not rounded. If Top Width equals Bottom Width, the outline points at (Top Width, Right Height) and (Bottom Width, Right Height) coincide and neither is rounded; keep Top Width below Bottom Width when you use fillets.

Limits

The property page shows Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters when:

•Outer Fillet R or Inner Fillet R is negative.

•A fillet radius is too large for the side it sits on: the fillets at the two ends of a side must fit within that side's length. A fillet of radius R at a 90 degree corner takes R off each of the two sides it touches, so the radii at the two ends of a side must add up to no more than that side's length. For example, with the default sizes the 25 mm top end and the 25 mm right end each limit Outer Fillet R to 12.5 mm. The 50 mm edge from the re-entrant corner to the top right of the horizontal leg carries Inner Fillet R and one Outer Fillet R, so those two together must not exceed 50 mm.

•A rounded corner turns back on itself (the outline doubles back), which can only happen with unusual or negative sizes.

The leg sizes themselves are not checked. Keep all four positive, Top Width no more than Bottom Width and Right Height no more than Left Height; otherwise the outline is no longer an L and may cross itself.

Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the shape's own properties.
