Stacked L

The Stacked L shape is a pair of identical L-shaped parts, one above the other. The upper L is the lower L turned through 180° and set above it, so the two parts interlock with a set vertical gap between them. Each part has the same outline as the single L shape with the same sizes. The shape produces two closed outlines, one for each part.
It appears in the shapes library under Other Shapes.
Insert point and direction
The insert point (Base X, Base Y) is the bottom left corner of the lower L: the sharp corner position. Outer Fillet R rounds that corner, but the insert point stays at the sharp corner position, so the rounded outline does not pass through it. The lower L has its upright leg on the left, Left Height tall and Top Width wide, and its foot along the bottom, Bottom Width long and Right Height tall.
The upper L is the same outline turned through 180°. Its foot runs along the top and its upright leg hangs down on the right. The bottom of that leg is Vert. gap above the top of the lower L's foot, and the underside of the upper foot is Vert. gap above the top of the lower L's leg. The horizontal gap between the two upright legs is Bottom Width - 2 x Top Width. The overall pair is Bottom Width wide and Left Height + Right Height + Vert. gap tall.
Both outlines are built clockwise. The lower L starts at the insert point and runs up its left side. When Outer Fillet R is greater than 0 it starts instead on the bottom edge, Outer Fillet R to the right of the insert point, runs round the bottom left corner and then up the left side.
Left Height, Bottom Width, Right Height and Top Width are dimensioned on the lower L. Vert. gap is dimensioned on the right, between the top of the lower foot and the bottom of the upper leg. The Outer Fillet R and Inner Fillet R dimensions are shown only when the radius is greater than 0.
Properties
Property |
Description |
Default |
Left Height |
Height of the L's upright leg, measured up its outside edge from the insert point (mm or inch). |
100 mm (4 in) |
Bottom Width |
Length of the L's foot along its outside edge (mm or inch). This is also the overall width of the pair. |
75 mm (3 in) |
Right Height |
Height of the L's foot, measured at its free end (mm or inch). |
25 mm (1 in) |
Top Width |
Width of the L's upright leg, measured across its top end (mm or inch). |
25 mm (1 in) |
Outer Fillet R |
Radius applied to every outside (convex) corner of both parts (mm or inch). Must not be negative. 0 leaves those corners sharp. |
0 |
Inner Fillet R |
Radius applied to the inside (re-entrant) corner of each L, where the upright leg meets the foot (mm or inch). Must not be negative. 0 leaves the corner sharp. The inside corner follows the sizes entered, so the radius goes to the correct corner even when Right Height is larger than Left Height. |
0 |
Vert. gap |
Vertical clearance between the two parts (mm or inch): from the top of the lower L's foot to the bottom of the upper L's leg, and from the top of the lower L's leg to the underside of the upper L's foot. |
25 mm (1 in) |
Limits and errors
The shape shows the Warning: Cannot build shape from these parameters message, and the parts are not built, when:
•Outer Fillet R or Inner Fillet R is negative.
•A fillet radius is too large for a side. The radii at the two ends of each side must add up to no more than that side's length. With the default sizes the two shortest sides are the top of the upright leg (Top Width, 25 mm) and the free end of the foot (Right Height, 25 mm). Both have two outside corners, so an Outer Fillet R above 12.5 mm cannot be built. The inside corner shares the 75 mm inside edge of the leg (Left Height - Right Height) with the top outside corner of the leg, and the 50 mm top of the foot (Bottom Width - Top Width) with the outside corner at the free end of the foot. With the default sizes, Inner Fillet R plus Outer Fillet R must therefore not exceed 50 mm.
The sizes and Vert. gap are not otherwise checked. The property page sets no minimum for them, and the shape still draws when the two parts touch or overlap. To get two separate parts:
•keep Top Width less than half of Bottom Width. At half or more, the two upright legs share a horizontal range, and they overlap whenever Right Height + Vert. gap is less than Left Height
•keep Vert. gap greater than 0; at 0 the parts touch
•keep Right Height less than Left Height + Vert. gap. Where the two feet overlap in X (Bottom Width more than 2 x Top Width), the clearance between them is Left Height + Vert. gap - Right Height, so the parts touch when Right Height equals Left Height + Vert. gap and overlap when it is larger
The two parts are always the same size. For a two-leg severing cut rather than an L part, use the L Cut.
Every 2D shape also has the Transform properties (Base X, Base Y, Rotation, Scale, Mirroring X) and the Polar Array properties, listed after the shape's own properties.
